Updated October 2026

Google Ads for a membership or cash-pay practice works on a slower clock than most healthcare advertising. Someone clicking an ad for a concierge doctor or a functional medicine practice is often weeks from joining. She reads the pricing page, joins the email list, comes back from a different device, and books a discovery call later. An account that measures cost per form fill will cut the keywords that actually produce members.

The search terms are also unusually leaky. Functional medicine shares vocabulary with supplement brands, free nutrition advice and practitioner training, and concierge shares it with hotel and travel concierge services. Left to broad matching and automated recommendations, a large part of the budget can drift into searches the practice would reject on sight.

We run these accounts around the practice's model and capacity: narrow care-model and price terms in the cities and licensed states the practice serves, landing pages that explain the model before asking for a call, and conversion tracking that follows prospects to the discovery call and beyond.

What Google Ads management with us includes

Campaigns by model and intent

Separate campaigns for functional care, concierge membership, price and payment searches, brand, and telehealth where it applies.

Negative keyword management

Standing exclusions for supplements, free advice, training, jobs and travel concierge terms, extended weekly from the search terms report.

Model-first landing pages

A page per campaign that explains how the practice works and what it costs before the discovery call form.

Ad copy within health policies

Ads that describe the practice, the model and the clinicians, with no outcome claims and no prescription drug names.

Tracking past the form

Discovery calls attended and new members recorded against the click that started them, with no health details sent to Google.

Budget tied to capacity

Spend set from open panel seats or program slots, raised or paused as capacity changes.

The searches functional and concierge campaigns should buy

The searches worth paying for name the care model, a city, the price or the payment question. Concern searches can work for functional practices when the landing page describes the approach without promises. Some searches look relevant and belong on the exclusion list from the first day.

How we run Google Ads for functional and concierge practices

1 Define the conversion before the campaign

The account optimizes toward whatever it is told counts as success. We set up the discovery call booking as the primary conversion, and record attended calls and new members afterwards, imported against the click ID with no health information attached. Email signups and pricing page visits are tracked as secondary signals.

The conversion window gets lengthened beyond the default to match how long the practice's prospects take to decide, so a member who joins weeks after the click is still credited to the keyword that brought her in.

2 Structure campaigns by model and intent

A practice that offers functional care and concierge membership needs separate campaigns for each, because the searches, the landing pages and the economics differ. Price and payment searches get their own campaign, since those prospects are further along. Brand and clinician name searches stay in a small campaign of their own so they never inflate the numbers of the others.

Geography follows the practice. Local campaigns cover the cities patients actually travel from, and telehealth campaigns target only the states where the clinicians are licensed.

Example: account structure for a practice offering both models

Concierge membership: concierge doctor, membership doctor, private physician, plus city
Functional care: functional medicine doctor, integrative medicine, plus city
Price and payment: concierge medicine cost, functional medicine insurance
Brand and clinicians: practice name, physician names
Telehealth: functional medicine telehealth, licensed states only

3 Keep the search terms clean

We start with phrase and exact match on care-model terms and expand only when the search terms report shows room. Broad match and fully automated campaign types stay off until conversion data is reliable, because they push spend toward cheap, loosely related searches.

The negative list starts long and grows every week. Supplements, free advice, careers, training and certification, and travel or hotel concierge searches are excluded from the first day, and every new irrelevant term found in the report is added.

Example: starting negative keywords

supplements, vitamins, protocol pdf, free, jobs, salary, certification, course, training, school, nutritionist, hotel concierge, travel concierge, concierge service

4 Write ads that describe the practice

Google disapproves health ads that make unsupported claims and restricts prescription drug terms, and functional medicine ads trip those rules more than most. Ads describe the model, the access, the clinicians and the next step. Phrases about fixing, reversing or curing anything stay out, which also keeps the ads credible to skeptical prospects.

Ad copy states the price model honestly where it helps, such as membership pricing or a cash-pay first visit, so prospects who cannot afford it do not click. Assets carry the clinician names, the how-it-works page and the comparison page.

Example: search ad

Concierge Doctor in Scottsdale | Membership Primary Care
Dr. Patel keeps a limited panel. See what membership includes and what it costs.
Learn how it works with your insurance. Book a 15 minute discovery call.

5 Send each click to a page that explains

Every campaign gets its own landing page. The concierge page covers what membership includes, the fee, panel status and a discovery call booking. The functional page covers the approach, the first visit, how programs are priced and the clinicians. Neither is the homepage, and neither asks for a call before the model is explained.

Prospects who are not ready can join the email list from the same page, and that list carries them for the weeks the decision takes. Discovery call requests get a reply within five minutes during business hours, because a prospect who reached out is often comparing practices that day.

6 Set budgets by capacity and optimize on members

Budget starts from capacity. A concierge panel with a few open seats needs a small, precise campaign. A functional practice adding a clinician needs more. When the panel fills, spend drops to brand terms and the waitlist, and it rises again when seats open.

Optimization runs on attended calls and members, once enough of them come in to judge. Keywords that produce form fills and no calls get cut, even when their cost per lead looks good, and keywords with expensive clicks that produce members keep their budget.

Where functional and concierge Google Ads usually go wrong

Optimizing to form fills

Cheap leads that never attend a call look like success in the account and starve the keywords that produce members.

Letting automation pick the searches

Broad match and auto-applied recommendations drift into supplement, free advice and training searches within weeks.

Ads that promise outcomes

Copy about reversing or fixing a condition gets disapproved, and the ads that slip through attract the wrong prospects.

Sending clicks to the homepage

A visitor searching for concierge pricing who lands on a general homepage has to dig for the answer, and usually goes back to the results instead.

What to expect and when

Campaigns, landing pages and tracking take the first few weeks to build. Discovery call bookings usually start in the first month, and the search terms report shapes the negative list heavily over that period.

Members come later than calls, often weeks or months after the first click, so the first quarter is judged mostly on attended calls and their quality. Once enough members are tracked back to keywords, the account shifts budget toward the terms that produce them.

What we report on

Cost per attended discovery call
By campaign. Booked calls that do not happen are not counted.
Cost per new member or patient
The number that decides whether the account is worth running.
Discovery call attendance rate from ads
Shows whether the landing pages and qualifying questions filter well.
Spend on excluded or irrelevant searches
Tracked weekly, so leaks are found before they add up.
Time from click to joining
Sets the conversion window and tells us how long to judge a keyword.

Ad policies and HIPAA for membership practices

Google restricts prescription drug terms and disapproves health ads with unsupported claims, and its personalized advertising rules limit audiences based on health, so we do not build remarketing lists from concern pages. If the account expands to Meta, Meta does not allow ads that assert or imply the viewer has a condition, so social creative promotes the practice, the model and events instead of addressing symptoms. The FTC expects any health claim in an ad to be substantiated, which rules out outcome language entirely.

Conversion tracking stays out of protected health information. Tags never fire on intake pages, offline imports carry only the click ID and the conversion type, and forms run on tools that sign a Business Associate Agreement. Membership pricing in ads and landing pages matches the model as the practice's healthcare attorney structured it, particularly where the practice bills insurance or Medicare.

Questions about Google Ads for functional and concierge medicine

How long until Google Ads produces members?

Discovery calls usually start in the first month. Members follow more slowly because prospects take weeks or months to decide, so early judgment rests on attended calls and their quality.

Can we advertise on symptoms or conditions?

On Google, keywords about the concerns your practice focuses on can work if the ad and landing page describe your approach without promising results. On Meta, ads cannot imply the viewer has a condition, so social creative stays on the practice and the model.

Should we bid on our own practice and physician names?

Usually yes, in a small separate campaign. It is inexpensive, protects the name from competitors and directories, and is kept apart so it does not flatter the other campaigns' numbers.

Can we run remarketing ads?

Only in limited ways. Google's personalized advertising rules restrict health-based audiences, so we avoid lists built from concern pages and rely on email to follow up with interested visitors.

Should we use Performance Max?

Not at launch. It needs reliable conversion data and gives less control over search terms, which matters in a category where so many searches are irrelevant. It can be tested later on solid member tracking.

What does Google Ads management cost?

We scope the work after a strategy call, and our custom marketing packages start at $2,500 a month.

What happens to the ads when our panel is full?

Spend drops to brand terms and the waitlist offer, and the landing pages switch to waitlist mode. When seats open, the campaigns come back up.
